Whether you're interested in a research internship or some other programmes abroad, volunteering can be an incredible opportunity to experience new cultures while working with local communities to make a meaningful impact.
Below, you will find a range of benefits that come with being a volunteer:
Developing new skills
During a volunteering programme, you will be faced with daily problem-solving tasks and you will have to work in collaboration with a team of different personalities, which will help you adapt to a lifestyle outside your comfort zone. As a young person, this kind of activities will help you develop a set of competencies that are a „must” for an independent life.
Increasing employability potential
Most often, when recruiters screen potential candidates, they look at the volunteering projects in which people have been involved and the type of skills developed. Our recommendation is to highlight specific events in your CV - such as when you organised a big fundraiser, volunteered at a canteen or oversaw the election process.
Increase your network of contacts (social network)
Another good reason to volunteer is that you will meet people from different sectors, giving you the chance to form relationships that can have a lasting impact on you. You might meet a good friend, a future business partner or have a conversation that sparks a change in your life.
Community impact
You have the chance to contribute to a community where you want to live, either by volunteering abroad or locally. This could include making an impact in terms of community development, protecting the environment or saving lives.
Discover the world
Although volunteering is unpaid, some organisations and schemes provide accommodation or meals for a small fee, or even for free, in return for the work you do. Volunteer travel can also be covered in terms of cost by a grant or fundraising.
Learn a foreign language
A great way to learn a country's language while volunteering is to work with an organisation that targets members of the local community. By learning foreign languages, you'll be more open to the culture and history of communities in other countries and better equipped to engage meaningfully with them.
Protect your mental health
Doing good for someone else is said to interrupt patterns that produce tension in the brain and replace them with a sense of purpose, positive emotions and higher levels of confidence, and that people who volunteer have a greater sense of satisfaction with their lives and find their health is generally better than those who don't.
